Key points

  • Cayman held 31,145 regulated funds at Q2 2026: 18,132 private and 13,013 mutual (CIMA).
  • About 56 percent of emerging hedge managers place their flagship in Cayman (2026).

Fund domicile

Fund domicile remains highly concentrated. The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority recorded 31,145 regulated funds at the second quarter of 2026, comprising 18,132 private funds and 13,013 mutual funds, both at record highs, as reported by Cayman Finance in July 2026. Cayman is the largest tax-neutral fund domicile in the world, with more than twice as many funds as its nearest competitor, and about 56 percent of emerging hedge fund managers place their flagship fund there. That depth is itself part of why allocators accept the vehicle so readily.

Dry-powder figures vary by scope and methodology (PE-only versus all private capital). Cayman counts are fund vehicles.

Private capital

The private markets these vehicles serve are large. Global private equity dry powder, committed but not yet deployed, stood at about USD 3.7 trillion in early 2026 on Preqin's measure, or about USD 3.9 trillion across all private capital strategies including venture, real estate, infrastructure and private debt on Bain's broader definition. Private capital deal value reached about USD 2.3 trillion in 2025, on course for the strongest year since 2021, and Preqin forecasts rising fund inflows through 2030 after a slower cycle.

How to read these

Two cautions. Cayman's figures count fund vehicles, not assets, so they measure the jurisdiction's use as a domicile rather than the money involved. And dry-powder figures vary by scope and methodology, PE-only versus all private capital, and by provider, which is why the two headline numbers here differ; both are legitimate on their own definitions. Read each figure for what it measures, with its source and year attached.

Every figure on this page carries its source, its year and whether it is a survey result or an estimate, so it can be cited precisely.
